6R Application Modernization Strategy
Compare retain, retire, rehost, replatform, refactor and replace strategies, including decision criteria, trade-offs and roadmap sequencing.
The six modernization dispositions
The 6R framework is a way to classify potential application actions. Terminology varies across organizations and cloud frameworks; AppModIQ uses the six definitions below for consistent portfolio discussion.
1. Retain
Keep the application largely as-is when it continues to meet business, technical and risk requirements.
2. Retire
Decommission applications that no longer provide sufficient value, after validating dependencies, data retention and user impact.
3. Rehost
Move the application to a different hosting environment with limited application-level changes.
4. Replatform
Make targeted platform or infrastructure changes without fundamentally redesigning the application.
5. Refactor
Change application architecture or code to address maintainability, scalability, integration or other technical needs.
6. Replace
Substitute an existing application with a different product or solution when replacement better fits business needs.
How to choose the right R
- Confirm business needs: Define critical capabilities, service levels and acceptable disruption.
- Assess technical health: Review architecture, dependencies, security, data and supportability.
- Compare options: Evaluate cost, effort, operational impact, risk and expected benefits.
- Test feasibility: Validate data migration, integration compatibility, licensing and organizational capacity.
- Sequence execution: Prioritize quick wins and prerequisites, then build delivery waves.
Common pitfalls
- Assuming rehosting automatically resolves technical debt.
- Choosing refactoring without evidence that the expected benefits justify its complexity.
- Retiring systems before confirming downstream integrations and retention requirements.
- Ignoring the business change and adoption effort associated with replacement.
From 6R classification to roadmap
A disposition is a decision hypothesis. Turn it into a roadmap by documenting the rationale, owners, confidence level, prerequisites, dependencies, expected outcomes and checkpoints. Reassess when new evidence emerges.
